The State of Minnesota set out to establish a new official flag for the state. The State Emblems Redesign Commission took public submissions, but had less than 2 months to select and finalize a design before the legislative deadline.

Tyler Michaletz & I reached out to the SERC Commission with a report of our analysis of the submissions, and to offer our assistance in the refinement and selection process. We also provided public testimony to the Commission advocating for a refinement process before selecting a final design. We began working with them to visualize alternatives to the seal design, another task of the commission, and then began working on the flag. This involved consulting and collaborating with commission members and members of NAVA, Ted Kaye & Brian Cham. Our time collaborating with everyone in this process was an amazing journey.

The flag design refinement phase began with us adjusting and presenting our recommended design alterations to the commission based on the selected final 3 flag designs. This resulted in the selection of a single base concept, Andrew Prekker’s design. After this, and further consultation with Ted Kaye, Brian Cham, Luis Fitch, and Aaron Whitnebel we made final variations, adjustments, and refinements to the spacing, colors, and composition of the design. We presented our final recommendations for the flag design at the final in-person SERC meeting where they selected our recommended design alteration.

After the final selection was made, we worked with Commission member Kim Jackson to finalize the flag design for their final report. This included working through construction diagrams, with which we worked Brian Cham of NAVA, to ensure consistent construction based on industry standards. The report was submitted by the New Years deadline, and barring any action by legislation the flag will be formally adopted on May 11th, Statehood Day.
